John and Emily Tallentire,
young and recently married, have left home to begin their new life together in
Crossbridge where, at the hiring ring, John is employed by Pennington, a local
farmer.
John relishes the toil of work on the open fells, but with an
an extra mouth to feed, the poor wages and long hours gradually take their toll
on married life.
As the couple become more distant, Emily finds it difficult
to resist falling for Jackson, Pennington's dashing son...
The years roll by and John reluctantly moves his growing
family to Whitehaven in order to earn a better wage working down the coal mines,
where, championed by John's brother Seth, the Union movement is gaining momentum.

It is a time of great passion on both a
personal and global scale.
The Great War is looming and John and Emily struggle to keep the flames
in their hearts burning through poverty, adversity and tragedy
