The Hired Man - 30th May to 2nd June 2007

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the adjustment to his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the local laws - including a ban on dancing - which are the brainchild of a local preacher bent on exercising control over the town's youths. When the Reverend's rebellious daughter Ariel sets her heart on Ren, her boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation and many of the locals are eager to believe the worst about the new kid. With its Oscar'-nominated hit score (the film soundtrack album has sold over 15 million copies world-wide) the celebrated film musical now bursts explosively onto the stage

Rounded Rectangle: NORFOLK & NORWICH THRESHOLD THEATRE GROUP - FOOTLOOSE
Director Ann Turner
Musical Director Holly Graham
Choreography Jean Cator
Playhouse Theatre, Norwich. 2nd June
‘Footloose’; this is exactly the reason for the formation of the Threshold Group with a dynamic cast of youngsters interspersed with some experience from the ‘adults’. Excellent casting and the need to be fit and young and mobile to be part of the younger element in this fast paced and excellently choreographed musical, the brief for the show matched the performance, the numbers were well delivered and well synchronised at speed, I felt quite exhausted just watching! The production team of Ann, Holly (and another talent string to her bow), and Jean were a dynamic, talented combination and an inspiration to the cast. The leads Ren (Joshua Lincoln) and Ariel (Kimberley Mason) show the benefits and success of learning and working through the youth groups to reach this standard, both had the vocals, dance ability, personality, mobility, and feelings for this very strong duo, and ‘Almost Paradise’ perfect. Kristina Dalzell as Rusty shone throughout the production with her vocals and personality and movement, very well teamed in numbers with Wendy-Jo (Rose Williams) and Urleen (Liz Futter). A fun characterisation of Willard from Joe Ringer, and, as expected, some good strong vocals to match to Josh. An aggressive and well sustained role of Chuck from Gabriel Mokake. New to the group, and a great asset, Phil Ormerod as Shaw, his ‘Heaven Help Me’ presented well and with mature acting. And the mothers Vi (Andrea Ferguson) and Ethel (Sharon Aitken) excellent duet of ‘Learning to be Silent’, and the moving ‘Can you find it in your heart’ from Vi. But above all, the enormous amount of energy and enthusiasm and feeling from these youngsters in all the ‘big’ numbers is what we take away from this production, the Company sang at full strength and full pelt and danced their socks off, and how they could dance, congratulations to all involved. Should also applaud all those who sped around the darkened stage and changed the scenes with such precision. ’Footloose’, the number, was a great dynamic company number as well as the title for this perfect choice show for Threshold Group.
